Elderly New York Pedestrian Killed By National Guard Convoy
New York, NY- An elderly man was killed Tuesday when a National Guardsman, driving a large military truck, struck him as he crossed an intersection on Canal Street.
Just after 1:00, a convoy of six large military vehicles, part of the New York National Guard, was traveling along Centre Street when they began to make a left turn onto Canal Street. However, when the light turned red one 22 year-old guardsman sped through the intersection striking an 82 year-old unidentified man, according to the New York Daily News.
“Six trucks went up in front and then this guy tried to make it” Armando Baez told the paper, “It’s the driver’s fault. He tried to catch up and that’s when he hit him.”
Witnesses told police the man was walking with a woman crossing from the north side of Canal to the south side. The man died on the scene but his identity hasn’t been released pending notification of his family.
The guardsman stayed on the scene.
